In 2004, TD Bank Group (TD) looked beyond investing in the organic growth of our existing businesses and in August this year, announced a deal to acquire 51% of Portland, Maine-based Banknorth Group, Inc. This acquisition significantly increased TD's personal and commercial banking footprint in the United States. TD also announced the acquisition of the Canadian personal lines property and casualty operations of Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group. The acquisition made Meloche Monnex Canada's largest direct-response property and casualty insurer and one of the country's top four property and casualty insurers in personal lines.
